BIKE
TRIPS TO FUENTES GEORGINAS
“Las Fuentes
Georginas” are hot springs located in
Zunil, Quetzaltenango Department. The
view is spectacular. This is one of the
most accessible bike trips. We leave from
Xela by pick-up to Almolonga summit since
the first kilometer is very steep, and
at this point we have not warmed up our
muscles. From this first hill we go down
to Zunil, then we go up a relatively steep
hill for about 9 kilometers. The entire
trip to the hot springs takes between
1 to 3 hours, depending on your fitness.
Since the view from Zunil to the hot springs
is very beautiful we make some stops to
take pictures. If you like you can also
make some stops to rest. After spending
between 2-3 hours in the hot springs,
we go down to Zunil, and finally we go
by bus to Xela because the road from Zunil
to Xela is very steep. We also have a
tour of Zunil, where we see the church,
San Simón (a Maya Saint) and the market.
Tour Dates:
Half day: Every day possible at 7:00 AM
and 2:15 PM. One day: Every day possible
at 8:00 AM back at 4:00 PM
Expenses Included:
Bicycle, guide, truck, entrance fee for
the hot springs, and public transportation
from Zunil to Xela.
What to bring/wear:
Comfortable clothing, sun block, 1 liter
of water at least, camera, sun glasses,
rain or wind jacket, swimsuit and towel.
Difficulty:

TRIPS TO "SAN ANDRÉS XECUL",
"SAN CRISTOBAL" AND ¨SALCAJA"
In San Andrés Xecul we find a canary
yellow Catholic Church which is quite
amazing. Its façade has many vines dripping
plump, purple fruit, and little angels
across the surface. The twin jaguars at
the top represent the hero twins of the
Maya holy book, the Popol Vuj.
San Cristobal is famous for its party
costumes, and this bike trip is a good
opportunity to see one of those. The main
landmark in town is a big Baroque church,
with a fantastic wood-beamed roof and
some fantastic frescoes.
Salcaja is one of the most important commercial
weaving centers. It has various fabrics,
many of them woven for the cortes worn
by Maya women. According to historians
its church Iglesia de San Jacinto is the
first Catholic foundation in Central America.
You may want to taste the local rompopo
(eggs and liquor) or caldo de frutas (fruit-based),
both of them can be found in many places
within the city.
Tour Dates:
Every day possible at 8:00 AM and 2:15
PM.
Expenses Included:
Bicycle and guide.
What to bring/wear:
Comfortable clothing, sun block, 1 liter
of water, camera, sun glasses and rain

TRIPS TO "SAN FRANCISCO EL ALTO".
It is worth to visit San Francisco el
Alto for the view alone, with the Quetzaltenango
valley below, a great plateau and the
Volcano Santa María in the opposite side
of the valley.
Located in the hillside this town has
the largest weekly market in the country,
this is an equally good reason for visiting
it.
The market has two trades, an animal market
where they sell from parrots to pigs,
and the textiles and clothing market,
some of it is traditional cloth.
During this trip you can get plenty of
very good photos.

Every day possible at 8:00 AM and 2:15
PM.
Expenses Included:
Bicycle and guide.
