Volcano Tajumulco

volcan-tajumulcoLocation: The municipality of Tajumulco, in the Department of San Marcos, 17 kilometers from the border with México. Elevation: 4,220 meters.

Tajumulco is the highest volcano in all Central America. It has two peaks, the higher peak reaches 4,220m (13,845 ft) and has a crater 50m (160 ft) in diameter. The lower peak has an elevation of 4,100m (13,451 ft). The hike to the top is relatively easy. To start this trek, we first go to the town San Marcos and then to a place called "Crucero Tajumulco." There we start our hike.


 

 

Itinerary

DAY ONE.

8:00 am Meet to prepare our equipment.

8:30 am Leave for San Marcos

The hike starts on rocky trails, among vegetation


By 4:30 pm we will arrive at our campsite. and flocks of sheep. Later, we get a wooded area. This is the land of the

"Mam" the indigenous group which lives in this region. At this point the trail becomes a bit steeper and we hike for roughly another hour until we arrive at a flat land. Here we will stop for a 45 minute lunch break. After lunch, we continue hiking through varied landscapes, alongside a view of the Pacific Ocean, the mountains of "Los Cuchumatanes," and the villages located in the lands below.

At 5:00 pm we go up to the summit to see the sunset.

At 6:00 pm we will eat dinner and rest for the morning. It is a tradition to prepare traditional Guatemalan hot chocolate to relax and warm the group.

DAY TWO.

4:45 am Wake up.

5:00 am Leave for the summit to see the sunrise.

7:00 am Return to campsite for breakfast.

8:00 am Begin descent.

11:00 am Rendezvous with the shuttle that will bring us back to Xela.

3:00 pm Arrive in Xela.

-Water (and hot chocolate)

Expenses Not Included:

-Tips for the guides.

-Costs incurred due to accident, sickness or other circumstances.

What to bring/ wear:

Hiking boots, sun cream, sun glasses, camera, binoculars, long pants, wind or rain jacket, gloves, a hat and cookies, or sweet food.

Difficulty:

It is a moderate hike but it becomes difficult with the equipment and high altitude.
