Volcano Santa Marìa is located in Quetzaltenango close to the village Llanos del Pinal. Its eruption in 1902 was one of the three largest eruptions of the 20th century. From its summit, the volcanoes Tajumulco, Tacana, Siete Orejas, Lacandón, Chicabal, Agua, Fuego, and the volcanoes around the lake Atitlán are visiable. And you will have a wonderful view of the Volcano Santiaguito which has an eruption every 40 minutes on average!
Icaro Tours has two options for this volcano; both are very popular and offer beautiful vistas. You can leave for this hike at 5:00am, which puts you at the top around 9:00am-usually the clearest part of the day. Or, once a month during the full moon, you can leave at mid-night, hike under the stars and see the sun rise from the top.
